“Rangoon!”, the former capital of Burma( Myanmar), the title of this movie gives us an idea regarding the backdrop of the movie which revolves around the bridge named ‘Rangoon’. It’s a symbolic representation of contradictions that played in the minds of three main characters Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan. Bollywood has certainly given us amazing war movies, prisoner of war movies and even love stories at the time of war movies. But there are multiple reasons why this one stands out different.
- The amazing amalgamation of a love triangle and patriotism is brilliantly done in the movie.
- All the three characters have given such mature performance, especially Shahid and Kangana. Both of them might not come across as very compatible in the promos but you might end up rooting for them after the interval.
- A complexity that resides in the mind of an Indian soldier who served in British Army is clearly seen Jamadar Nawab.
- You might not find a lot of bloodshed or many hero moments in the movie, which is actually good because it keeps the movie on track. The story line is very straight, no suspense blocks as such, but the end is a little unpredictable as well as apt.
- Kangana is of course the main centre character, she has even beautifully portrayed the character of Miss Julia, who baffles everyone with her innocent questions, childlike playfulness, straightforward punch lines, few sword fighting moments and certainly her hot lip locks.
- Many of us are left spellbound by the national anthem of ‘Azad Hind Fauj’ personally sung by one of the major character.
- Look out for the ‘General’ of British army who speaks humorous yet authentic Hindi with an English accent. He’s seen making big promises like ‘pran jaye pur vachan na jaye’ and manipulates his way through entire movie. One of his catchy dialogue is “if ever britishers leave India, this country will become the most corruptible one”(which is actually true now).
So, go and watch this movie, it might not be a great masala entertainer, but it has its own wow moments. This is not a typical war movie or action packed. It has a message not very loud but audible enough to understand. Watch it to get a fresh perspective of freedom struggle that does not include Gandhiji but the great Subhash Chandra Bose.
